Luteinizing hormone (LH) is a glycoprotein hormone consisting of two subunits α and β. The α subunit of this hormone is similar to the α subunit of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), but the β subunit differs from these hormones, which results in differences in biochemical characteristics.
The abnormal level of luteinizing hormone is related to the increase or decrease of FSH, estrogen, progesterone, testosterone and pathological conditions. Therefore, determining the concentration of this hormone is helpful in predicting ovulation to evaluate infertility, gonadal and pituitary gland disorders. It can also be used in laboratory fertilization.
