The PV-FSH kit helps diagnose and treat pituitary and endocrine disorders. Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) is a glycoprotein hormone consisting of two subunits α and β. Its α subunit is similar to α subunit of luteal hormone (LH), human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH).
This hormone is secreted by the anterior pituitary under the influence of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnR) released from the hypothalamus. FSH and LH are released in pulses from the gonadotropic cells of the anterior pituitary.
The level of FSH increases in the middle of the cycle, which is lower than LH. Due to changes in ovarian function and decreased estrogen secretion, high concentrations of FSH occur during menopause. Abnormal FSH concentrations may also indicate hypothalamic-pituitary axis dysfunction.
In adults, the lack of FSH, along with the low concentration of LH and sex steroids, may indicate pituitary hypofunction. Determination of serum FSH, following GnRH administration, may be helpful in differentiating these two conditions.
