The PV-Total PSA product is based on quantitative immunoassay luminescence and based on paramagnetic particles, which is designed for the quantitative measurement of Total Prostate Specific Antigen (TPSA) in human serum and plasma using the PadinAnalyzer immunoassay analyzer.
Basically, PV-TPSA is used to monitor the tumor and its treatment stages. This product should not be used for primary diagnosis and tumor screening. Prostate-specific antigen or PSA is a glycoprotein serine protease. This antigen is not a simple molecule and there are five isoforms in the serum.
Its proteolytic property is deactivated in the complex with protease inhibitors such as 1-antichymotrypsin (ACT), alpha-2-macroglobulin and other acute phase proteins in the blood. In addition to forming a complex with other agents, this antigen is also present in the blood in a free form, which is inactive in terms of proteolytic properties.
PSA monitoring has increased in recent years. In general, an increase in the concentration of PSA in the serum indicates the pathological state of the prostate (prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or carcinoma). PSA test is valuable in diagnosing stable and malignant prostate in people with a history of prostate cancer surgery and treatment.
Continuous increase in PSA or increase after treatment indicates relapse or stable type of disease. The PSA test is used as an adjunctive test in the management of patients with prostate cancer.
Because PSA antigen is not specific for prostate cancer, PSA tests lack sufficient sensitivity and specificity for early diagnosis and screening of this disease. A number of studies have shown that the percentage of free PSA (PSA) in patients with prostate cancer is significantly lower than those with benign disease or healthy individuals.
The TPSA/PSA ratio is used to improve sensitivity and specificity in patients with TPSA values in the "gray zone" (4-10 ng/mL).
